Experience a World-Rare Dual Spiral Structure, a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property
About this spot
Built on Iimori Mountain in Kansei 8 (1796), this hexagonal, three-story building stands approximately 16.5 meters tall and is formally called "Entutsusa-Misosadou." Its interior features a unique dual spiral ramp structure with separate upward and downward paths, allowing visitors to pay respects in one-way traffic without passing each other—a world-rare architectural achievement. Once, thirty-three statues of the Kannon (Avalokitesvara) stood within the hall, and a single circuit through the interior constituted a pilgrimage to all thirty-three temples dedicated to Kannon. Designated as a nationally Important Cultural Property, the wooden structure's realization of this design showcases astounding Edo-period engineering. The experience of ascending and descending the spiral ramp while hearing the creaking floorboards is the main attraction, and the building's twisted exterior is worth photographing.
Tips
Located just near the graves of the nineteen Byakko Corps members on Iimori Mountain, making it easy to visit both in one trip. Admission is paid, and cash is recommended at the reception desk. The interior ramps are sloped with aged floorboards, so wear slip-resistant shoes. Since the interior space is narrow, move considerately and maintain one-way traffic during busy times.
Best time to visit
Allow 30-45 minutes. Visit in the morning as part of your Iimori Mountain visit. Visiting before crowds arrive allows you to savor the spiral passage at leisure.
