The main brewery of Suehiro Sake Brewery, one of Aizu's premier sake producers, founded in Kaei 5 (1852). The wooden warehouses built from the Meiji through Taisho periods are impressive with their soaring exposed beam structures and are registered as nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. During the brewery tour, guides explain the fermentation process and the history of sake production; after viewing, you can enjoy sake tasting at the shop. The brewery has connections to modern Aizu history—it once hosted Shika, the mother of Noguchi Hideyo (a famous bacteriologist), during her visit for hot spring treatments, and items related to Noguchi remain. A café with Taisho-era charm is set up in part of the brewery, where you can take a break with sake-brewery sweets. Conclude your day of tracing the Byakko Corps' footsteps by selecting souvenirs while discussing plans to share sake that embodies the terroir of Aizu—a refined and befitting end to friends' journey through history.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Nisshinkan, located in central Aizu-Wakamatsu (Nishinmachi area). Brewery tours are free with regularly scheduled guided tours; confirm times on the official website before visiting. If sake tasting is planned, designate a non-drinker as the driver, or arrange to use public transportation or a taxi. Sake bottles are heavy for carrying; a shopping bag will be convenient.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. Time your visit to coincide with the final tour slot in the evening. After tasting, you can head directly to dinner in the city for efficient planning.
