``Do Not Do What Is Wrong''—Relive the Academy Where Byakko Corps Members Studied

This interactive facility is a nearly complete reconstruction of Nisshinkan, the premier academy of the Aizu domain, established in Kyowa 3 (1803). Young samurai of the Aizu domain entered at age ten, and many Byakko Corps members honed both their literary and martial skills here. The precept "Do not do what is wrong"—the closing line of the "Jumon" (Rules of the Jussho) that children followed before admission—remains a phrase symbolizing the Aizu spirit, passed down through generations. The expansive grounds feature reconstructions of the Taiseiden Hall, martial arts halls, and observatory ruins, with the Suiren Suiba Pool—said to be among Japan's oldest swimming facilities—also worth viewing. The facility offers hands-on experiences including archery, seated meditation, and red cow (akabeko) painting, allowing you to experience the academy's education through all your senses. Witnessing the soldiers' daily life here, after seeing the tragic conclusion at Iimori Mountain, brings the Byakko Corps story into three-dimensional perspective.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Iimori Mountain. Located on a highland slightly away from central Aizu-Wakamatsu; traveling by car is convenient (free parking available). The grounds are expansive and viewing takes considerable time; if you plan to do activities, decide your time allocation in advance for smooth flow. Archery experiences and similar activities have separate fees and reception times, so confirm details when entering.
Best time to visit
Allow 1.5-2 hours. The afternoon after lunch allows for a leisurely tour. If targeting activities, note activity reception end times.
