Experience Life in a Thatched-Roof House and Post Town at the Museum—Restoration of the Original Station House
About this spot
A museum built on the site of the original station house, restoring an Edo-period honjin (a prestigious inn used by feudal lords and officials during their travels). The building recreates the upper chamber and has an irori hearth with an active fire, allowing you to experience the life of the post town through all five senses—including the aroma that lingers in thatched-roof houses. The exhibits are comprehensive, featuring farm tools, household items, and seasonal photographs of Ouchi-juku, offering a rare opportunity to see the interior of thatched-roof houses that you cannot fully appreciate from outside. You'll learn about the structure of thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snow and how re-thatching is done, which will deepen your appreciation of each building along the street.
Tips
Located in the middle of the Ouchi-juku street, it's easy to stop by while walking. The admission is 250 yen for adults; bring cash to be sure. The irori smoke lingers indoors, so adjust your outerwear if the smell bothers you. Winter closures or modified hours may occur due to snow—check locally.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Visiting mid-walk will deepen your understanding of the buildings you see in the second half.
