Stroll Through the Post Town with Thatched-Roof Houses and Enjoy the Full View from the Observation Deck

About this spot

A post town on the Aizu West Road (Shimotsuke Road) connecting Aizuwakamatsu and Nikkō. Over 30 thatched-roof houses line both sides of the old post road in an orderly manner, forming a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. The street, free of utility poles, carries clear mountain spring water through channels, and each house still operates as a craft shop, soba restaurant, or souvenir store, living as it did historically. Climb the stone steps to the Koyasu Kannon Hall at the end of the street to see the entire post town spread out before you with thatched roofs in a single line—this panoramic view is famous as the iconic photo spot symbolizing Ouchi-juku. As you and your companion leisurely walk through the town that has continued since the Edo period, time seems to stand still in this peaceful atmosphere.

Tips

From Yunoukami Onsen Station, it's about 15 minutes by car or taxi. Use the paid parking lot (approximately 500 yen for standard vehicles) at the town entrance. The street has unpaved sections and water channels, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The stone steps to the observation deck are somewhat steep—use the handrails and climb slowly. Many shops close early in the evening, so buy souvenirs early.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The afternoon before lunch is lively and enjoyable when shops are fully open. Take your time for the panoramic photo from the observation deck.
