An interactive aquarium themed around the "Shiome no Umi" (Tide Meeting Sea) off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture where the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents meet. Its formal name is "Fukushima Marine Science Museum." The highlight is a triangular tunnel that runs through the vast tank expressing the two ocean currents, where the spectacular sight of large schools of sardines and bonito passing overhead is truly awe-inspiring. Outdoors stands a large barefoot touch pool called "Janomedoki Beach" (蛇の目ビーチ), where visitors can experience tide pool play by searching for crabs, starfish, and small fish in the shallow waters—making it hugely popular with young children. The facility is also known for its research on coelacanths, the "living fossil," and the exhibits of specimens and videos captivate adults as well. With gentle routes centered on ramps, the aquarium is easy to visit with a stroller, and facilities such as nursing rooms are well-equipped, making it a family-friendly aquarium.
Tips
From JR Izumi Station, it's about 15 minutes by bus, and from the Iwaki Yumoto IC of the Joban Expressway by car, it's about 20 minutes to the paid parking lot at Aquamarine Park. If you plan to play at Janomedoki Beach, bring a change of clothes and towels for your children. The facility offers stroller rentals and nursing rooms, so confirm their locations at the reception desk for peace of mind.
Best time to visit
Approximately 3 hours. The late morning right after opening is relatively uncrowded, and Janomedoki Beach can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
