Exploring Futabasaurus and the Simulated Mine Tunnel: Dinosaurs Born in Iwaki

A fossil and coal-mining museum located in the Iwaki Yumoto Hot Spring district. The main highlight is the impressive skeletal specimen of Futabasaurus, a long-necked dinosaur discovered by high school students on the Iwaki coast. Children fascinated by dinosaurs will be captivated by its overwhelming scale. The fossil displays are extensive, featuring dinosaur skeletons and ammonites. The latter half of the museum takes you into the world of the Joban Coalfield, once the largest in the Tohoku region. In the simulated mine tunnel, accessed via elevator descent to the mine entrance, the work and lives of coal miners are recreated with original materials and figures. You and your child can experience firsthand the history of Yumoto's prosperity as a coal-mining town. Learning the backstory here about how Hawaiians were born will deepen your experience throughout the day.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from JR Joban Line Yumoto Station, with free parking available. Check ahead as there are closed days (such as the third Tuesday of each month). The simulated mine tunnel is slightly dimly lit, so holding hands with younger children who might be scared is reassuring.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1.5 hours. The late morning right after opening is less crowded, allowing you to view exhibits at your child's pace.
