This pond-stroll Japanese garden in Nanko Park preserves the garden philosophy of Matsudaira Sadanobu and is a celebrated garden in its own right. Pine and maple trees frame the pond at the garden's center, and walking slowly across stepping stones and bridges while enjoying the changing vistas is both pleasant and meditative. At the Shorakutei, a sukiya-style tea house, you can sip matcha and enjoy seasonal sweets while gazing out at the garden. Tips

A short walk from Nanko Shrine, located within Nanko Park with shared parking. There is a separate charge for matcha in addition to garden admission; confirm whether tea service is available at the reception desk. Some indoor areas require removing shoes, so slip-on shoes make transitions easier. Closing times vary by season, so allow extra time if visiting in the evening.
