An ancient shrine said to have been established by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi in the Heian period, honoring the deities of the three Kumano mountains and ranking among Aizu's most historic sites. The main attraction is the worship hall 'Nagatoko,' designated a National Important Cultural Property. This magnificent open-air structure features 44 thick round pillars, each 1.5 shaku in diameter, arranged in perfect rows. Its wall-less, open design allows wind to flow freely, creating an atmosphere at once solemn yet refreshingly grand. The treasure hall houses national treasures, including a bronze bell, and the grounds are home to a great ginkgo tree said to be 800 years old. After a lively day of ramen and storehouse-hopping, taking a deep breath in the serene, cedar-shaded grounds brings profound depth to your journey.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Kitakata city center; public transportation is limited, making a taxi or car visit practical. Admission is charged; the treasure hall uses the same entrance. The grounds feature gravel paths and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. Being slightly removed from the ramen-filled downtown, bring water for the walk.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon, when the western sun filters through the 'Nagatoko' pillars, is particularly mystical and beautiful.
