Historic Temple with a Panoramic View of the Tadami River – Kikkō Hall at the Birthplace of the Red Cow Legend
About this spot
This ancient temple in Yanai is counted among Japan's three sacred Kokuzō Bodhisattva temples and was founded by Priest Tokuichi approximately 1,200 years ago. The main hall, Kikkō Hall, juts dramatically outward from atop a massive boulder overlooking the Tadami River, commanding a majestic presence. From the hall's edge, the Tadami River winds grandly through the mountains below, with the town of Yanai nestled in the valley. The red cow figurine (akabeko) – a beloved Aizu folk toy – is said to owe its origins to a legend of a red-haired ox that helped transport timber during the reconstruction of Kikkō Hall. Visitors can touch the statue of a cow in the temple grounds to invite good fortune. In the clear morning air, as river mist clings to the Tadami River below, anticipation builds for the scenic wonders of Oku-Aizu that await ahead.
Tips
The temple is about a 10-minute walk from JR Tadami Line Aizu-Yanai Station, or about 15 minutes by car from the Ban-etsu Expressway Aizu-Sakasitta IC. The stone steps leading to the temple grounds are steep, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Entry is free, and there is a parking lot near the temple grounds. Small statues of red cows and other souvenirs make wonderful travel mementos.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. Early morning, when fewer people are around and the air is crisp, is recommended. The view of the Tadami River from Kikkō Hall's edge is especially beautiful at this time.
