Experience a traditional hand-rowed wooden boat crossing through the Kirigenjō Gorge, a canyon of the Tadami River that spans Mishima and Kaneyama towns. This experience revives the historic ferry service that once connected the Sanko settlement along the river with the opposite bank. The gorge earned its name "Kirigenjō" (Misty Phantom Gorge) from the ethereal river mist that rises from the water on summer mornings and evenings due to the temperature difference between water and air. Wearing a traditional straw hat, you'll board the boat and glide silently along the river – hearing only the echo of the oars against the water's surface – while sheer green cliffs and mirror-like water slowly drift past. The boatman's stories of the valley settlements and the traditional ways of Oku-Aizu add poignant depth to the experience. Tips
Boat rides are by advance reservation only and generally operate from spring through early autumn. There are multiple boarding locations, so confirm the meeting point and directions when you book. Bring a light jacket or wrap, as the river can be cool even in summer. High water levels or strong winds may cause cancellations, so keep the contact information for the day's operation readily available.
Best time to visit
Allow 40 minutes to 1 hour. To catch the river mist, go in the early morning or evening. An evening boat ride may reward you with the gorge bathed in amber light.
