Stroll the Boardwalk to Seek Alpine Plants Blooming on the Volcanic Scree
About this spot
A wetland at approximately 1,600 meters elevation that spreads right beside the Jodo Plateau Parking Lot. A level wooden boardwalk is maintained, making it easy to walk the loop in 20–30 minutes. From early to mid-summer, white fruiting spikes of cotton grass, chinguruma (pink spiranthes), iwagagami, and other alpine plants color the ground beneath your feet, allowing you to enjoy up close the landscape unique to Jodo Plateau—where desolate volcanic scree and delicate flowers coexist. Raising your eyes, a steaming Issetsukyozan rises on one side and the funnel-like Azuma-Kofuji on the other—a luxurious setting where any shot combining boardwalk and mountains makes for a beautiful image. After experiencing the scale of the volcano on the crater rim walk, finishing with a quiet stroll through the wetland creates a perfect rhythm of contrast—the heart of what makes Jodo Plateau exploration memorable.
Tips
Stay on the boardwalk to protect the vegetation. The flat, easy walking path is perfect for cooling down after the crater rim walk. Afternoon light is softer and more photogenic, but mountain weather changes quickly, so bringing rain gear is wise. After your stroll, check out the gift shop at Jodo Plateau Rest House.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. The afternoon, when slanting light illuminates the wetland, is most photogenic.
