A grand mansion designated as a National Important Cultural Property, located at the heart of Chizu Post Town on the Inaba Kaido. The Ishitani family, who served as post station magistrates and senior village headmen and prospered through forestry management, built this estate spanning approximately 3,000 tsubo. The grounds contain over forty rooms and seven storehouses. The main attraction is undoubtedly the soaring earthen floor just inside the entrance. The massive pine beams, darkened by centuries of smoke, create a space layered with crossbeams that evoke the strength of the timber-rich region of Chizu. From the sitting rooms, you can view ornamental ponds and manicured gardens, and take a rest at the hearth room. This masterpiece of modern Japanese architecture is a must-see early in your journey.
Tips
About 10 minutes on foot from Chizu Station, and just a short walk from the free tourist parking lot. The interior follows a set route through sitting rooms and gardens, so slip-on shoes are recommended for comfort. Check the official website in advance for closure days and opening hours.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The morning hours right after opening are less crowded, and the natural light streaming into the earthen floor is particularly beautiful.
