The oldest townhouse architecture known to exist in Kurayoshi city, the former Makita family residence, called "Kurayoshi Yodoya" due to its deep connections with the wealthy Osaka merchant house Yodoya. The main structure facing the main street has a modest gabled roof design. Inside, thick beams form the roof structure, an earthen passageway, and connected rooms with tatami mats unfold—spaces that tell of Kurayoshi's prosperity as a merchant town. Exhibits provide insight into the Yodoya's history and commercial activities of the time. This valuable spot allows you to experience life in the old days from inside the townhouse, not just by viewing the Shirakabe Dozo-gumi from the outside.
Tips
Entry is free. While within walking distance from the center of the Shirakabe Dozo-gumi, note that there are designated closed days, so check in advance. Some areas require removing shoes, so wear easy-to-remove footwear for smooth access.
