A rare "ringing beach" stretching along the coast near Akasaki in Kotouura Town, Tottori Prefecture. Rather than sandy shore, it is densely covered with elliptical stones polished over many years by the Japan Sea's rough waves. Each time waves wash in and out, the stones collide with each other, producing clear, melodious sounds of "ka-ra-ko-ro" and "go-ro-go-ro." From this ringing sound comes the saying "when stones ring well, things turn out well," making the beach beloved as an auspicious place. It is famous for wish-making—visitors write their wishes on stones and place them on the beach. Local volunteers continue to maintain and promote the beach's appeal, and this power spot soothes the soul simply by standing amid the wave sounds. The stone sounds shift in character with wave strength, so you can hear a different "beach performance" with each visit.

Tips

Access to the beach is via signage along Route 9. The parking area is just a short walk from the beach. The pebble shore is uneven underfoot, so wear sneakers with good grip rather than sandals. Avoid getting too close to the water's edge on days with high waves. Bringing a pen for wish-writing makes the experience smoother.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Early morning, when fewer people are around, lets you hear the wave sounds most clearly, and the sea looks beautifully blue in the morning light.
