Be Awed by the Spectacular Dragon Carvings on the Main and Worship Halls

About this spot

Situated on a high ground overlooking the port town of Akasaki in Kotouura Town, this shrine is affectionately called "Arajin-san" (荒神さん) by locals. The highlight is the exquisite carvings that fill the sacred buildings. Across the ceiling of the worship hall's outer area runs a single-piece carved dragon stretching several dozen meters, coiled in undulating patterns that take your breath away when viewed from below—it seems ready to move at any moment. The main sanctuary is equally filled with carvings of dragons, lions, and scenes from Chinese legends, allowing close appreciation of the master craftsmen's skills. As a shrine that has long drawn the faith of seafaring people, it is believed to grant safe passage at sea and protection for livestock and horses. Combined with a wish-prayer at Nariiishi Beach, the blessings are all the more powerful.

Tips

There is a parking area for visitors below the grounds. Since the ceiling dragon is directly overhead, viewing requires extended neck-craning—binoculars or smartphone zoom are recommended for observing fine details. Wear comfortable walking shoes as the path involves climbing stone steps.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. The grounds are quietest in the morning, and the shadows on the carvings appear softest.
