Shiotani Sadao was a pioneering Japanese art photographer celebrated for his gentle gaze that captured the San'in landscape and its people. His memorial museum is housed in his birthplace—a wooden traditional house that has been restored—located in a corner of Akasaki's historic streetscape. Inside, a warm world of soft-focus photography unfolds, bringing quiet to life scenes of San'in's seaside living from the Taisho through Showa periods. The building itself is noteworthy: it retains the character of a merchant house, featuring tatami rooms, a small courtyard, and exhibits of period photography equipment, creating a space where time flows gently. The surrounding area still bears traces of when merchant ships made the town prosperous, and strolling through the retro port town after viewing is a delight.
