About this spot

This is a kakezukuri (cliffside) hall built to fit snugly into a natural rock cave in Iwaya Valley (岩屋谷) in Wakasa Town. The sight of the stage-built structure clinging to a hollow in the cliff face is overwhelming, and the hall is counted among Japan's three great nageire-do halls and designated a National Important Cultural Property. Its principal image is Fudo Myoo, and the site has a long history of faith as a training ground for Shugendo mountain ascetics. Looking up from below, you will catch your breath at the architectural marvel of the pillars and rock face becoming one. Surrounded by a clear stream and deep greenery, it is a highlight of sightseeing in Wakasa where you can enjoy worship and viewing amid the quiet.

Tips

You will climb a staircase up to near the hall, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking space nearby is limited, so please share courteously. Most photos are taken looking upward, and shooting a bit wide-angle captures the full power of the hall and the rock face.
