Located just steps from the great torii gate at Semizume, this long-established favorite soba restaurant is a fixture among Izumo shrine pilgrims. The signature wariko soba features the distinctive Izumo style: lacquered, round bowls stacked three tiers high. The dark, fragrant noodles come from traditional grinding method that uses the entire buckwheat seed, and as you chew, the sweetness unfolds on your palate. The custom is to top with condiments, pour broth over them, and then pour the remaining broth into the next tier below—a ritual where flavor deepens with each bite. The cold soba, with its smooth throat-feel, washes down the fatigue from your shrine walk.
Tips
Lines form around lunchtime, so arriving before noon ensures seating. Be aware that the restaurant closes once soba runs out, so if you plan to visit later, arrive early or be prepared.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 60 minutes. Arriving just before the noon rush allows you to avoid lines and enjoy freshly made wariko soba.
