Next stop: Savor Three-Tiered Izumo Wariko Soba Moments from the Grand Torii GateAbout this spot
Located just east of Izumo Taisha, this museum is dedicated to mythology and ancient Izumo. The highlight is the exhibition hall featuring 358 bronze swords from the Arajingaya site (荒神谷遺跡) arranged in spectacular rows. These, along with the bronze bells from the Kamoist site (加茂岩倉遺跡), are designated National Treasures, and the sight of swords gleaming across the entire floor is truly breathtaking. From the wooden Uzuhashira pillars (宇豆柱)—formed by binding three large trees together—excavated from the grounds of Izumo Taisha, and the reconstructed model of an ancient towering shrine said to have once soared skyward, you can experience the impressive scale of the grand ancient inner sanctuary. Visiting before or after your prayers at Izumo Taisha will deepen your understanding of both the shrine and its mythological world.
Tips
Located just east of Izumo Taisha, only a short walk away. The museum has coin lockers and a café, allowing you to store your belongings and tour lightly. Some special exhibitions may have separate admission; check at the reception desk.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 90 minutes. Morning hours experience fewer tour groups, allowing you to examine the bronze sword displays at leisure.
