Pray for Safe Seas and Good Fortune at the Head Shrine of Ebisu
About this spot
The head shrine among over 3,000 Ebisu shrines nationwide. The enshrined deities are Kotoshironushi, the god of the sea and commerce (Ebisu), and Mihohitsuhime-no-mikoto, goddess of abundant harvests. In addition to protection of seafarers and prosperity in business, Ebisu is revered as a musical deity who loves sounds and instruments, and many musical instruments are dedicated in the main prayer hall. Notable features include the unique "Miho-zukuri" architectural style with two main sanctuaries side by side, and the sound of miko priestesses' bells that ring through the shrine grounds. As Mihoshin and Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) are parent and child deities respectively, visiting both shrines as a pair deepens the blessing—an ideal place for a couple's journey.
Tips
A parking area for worshippers is available along the harbor. Make your prayer offering with two bows, two claps, and one final bow. The custom of "dual pilgrimage" visiting both this shrine and Izumo Taisha exists, so an omamori (charm) book makes a nice travel record. Combine your visit with the Blue Stone Pavement Street at the shrine gate for efficiency.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The shrine grounds are quiet before noon, allowing for a leisurely visit.
