Gazing Up at the Betafumi Hill: A Wall-Like Bridge from the Opposite Shore
About this spot
A bridge approximately 1.7 km long connecting Eshima in Yatsuka Town, Matsue City to Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture. The central section is raised high to allow large vessels to pass underneath, creating a steep 6.1% gradient on the Shimane side. After being featured in a TV commercial as the "Betafumi Hill," the imposing wall-like structure became a nationwide sensation. The dramatic "wall" is actually a compression effect created by using a telephoto lens—viewing it from the opposite shore is the classic photographic angle. When you actually drive across, you'll be surprised at how gentle the slope is, and from the bridge you can see views of Lake Nakaumi, Mount Daisen, and the mountain ranges of the Shimane Peninsula all at once. A spectacular spot that impresses when viewed and surprises when traversed—you get twice the value.
Tips
The classic wall-like angle is best captured from a distance using telephoto from the Sakaiminato shore. Parking or stopping on the bridge or shoulders is prohibited, so always photograph from a safe location. It's recommended to cross in both directions to experience the slope from both perspectives.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. Morning light creates striking contrast between the blue of Lake Nakaumi and the bridge.
