About this spot

Located on Shinmon Street, this is a specialty shop for fugu processed goods. The signature ofuku yaki are pastries shaped like fugu fish, named after the auspicious characters for 'fuku' (fortune). The fluffy batter surrounds a generous amount of sweet azuki bean paste with restrained sweetness. Fresh from the griddle, these pastries are baked one at a time at the shop counter, and it's a classic pleasure to stroll through the temple town with warm, freshly baked pastries in hand. The shop also displays fugu-based Izumo regional specialties such as uzu-ni (minced fugu stew) and sun-dried fugu—perfect souvenirs of the sea. These charming creations never fail to catch visitors' eyes; they're the reliable supporting player in any temple-town food walk.

Tips

Counter sales mean easy drop-ins, though you may wait for freshly baked items. When food walking, pause in a spot that doesn't obstruct foot traffic. Wet wipes are handy as these pastries can be messy.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30 minutes. Arriving around 2 p.m., snack time, makes it most likely to meet freshly baked treats.
