About this spot

This is the starting station of the Ichibata Electric Railway (一畑電車), adjacent to JR Izumo-shi Station. Affectionately known as Bataden, this local private railway connects Izumo and Matsue while tracing the northern shore of Lake Shinji (宍道湖). Buy an unlimited-ride free pass at the ticket window, then board the cute orange train and set off on your lakeside train journey. This historic railway, which has even served as a film location, offers retro rolling stock and tranquil scenery that shifts from countryside to lakeshore, making it a line where riding itself becomes the sightseeing. Standing just behind the driver's seat, kids can enjoy the forward view and feel like they are the ones driving.

Tips

The free-ride pass can be purchased at the ticket window of Dentetsu-Izumoshi Station (電鉄出雲市駅). Trains run only one to two times an hour, so checking the time of the train you want to ride before buying your ticket goes smoothly. IC cards cannot be used, so do not forget to bring cash.

Best time to visit

About 20 minutes. Riding around 9am, outside the school commute rush, lets you sit comfortably and is perfect for enjoying the view from the window.
