Stroll and taste local specialties along a street of white-walled merchant houses and soy sauce breweries
About this spot
About a 10-minute walk from Unshu-Hirata Station, this white-walled merchant townscape retains the character of its days as a distribution hub for Unshu cotton. Along the stone-paved street lined with substantial townhouses with distinctive roof construction, traditional soy sauce and sake breweries and old shops making handmade ginger candy continue their trades. As you walk, you'll encounter small discoveries at storefronts offering tastings and loose-weight purchases—this is the charm of Momen Kaido. At the Momen Kaido Exchange Center, you can learn about the town's history and townhouse architecture, and the lunch at a café housed in a renovated old townhouse is brimming with travel romance, making it ideal for a rest break during your walk.
Tips
Cars also pass through these streets, so hold small children's hands as you walk. Start by picking up a walking map at the Momen Kaido Exchange Center so you won't miss the highlights. Many shops close before evening, so visiting in the morning to early afternoon is the best approach.
Best time to visit
Journey time: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. The morning is when shops are opening and bustling with activity, and townhouse café lunches are easy to enter without a long wait
