Approximately 50-Minute Moat Cruise Featuring the Iconic Roof-Lowering Low Bridge

About this spot

This pleasure boat tour is the signature attraction of Matsue tourism, making a complete circuit around the moat that encircles the National Treasure Matsue Castle. During this approximately 50-minute journey along the roughly 3.7-kilometer Horikawa moat, you'll hear the boatman's narration while enjoying views of stone walls, willow groves, and the castle town landscape from water level. The signature experience is the bridge-ducking, especially at low-clearance bridges where the boat's roof automatically lowers and passengers must crouch to pass through—a thrilling experience beloved by visitors. With three boarding platforms at Ōtemae Plaza, Karakoro Plaza, and Matsue Horikawa Fureai Plaza, the all-day pass allows unlimited boarding and alighting, making it an excellent option for sightseeing transportation.

Tips

The Ōtemae Plaza boarding platform is conveniently located directly in front of the site of Matsue Castle's main gate and fits well with this course's route. Morning departures are relatively uncrowded and the water is calm. Since there are steps at boarding areas, wear comfortable clothing and non-slip shoes. During bridge-ducking, follow the boatman's signal and crouch accordingly.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes duration. Morning departures feature calm water and the stone walls and willows reflected in the moat are most beautiful.
