One of only 12 existing castle towers in Japan and the sole National Treasure-designated castle tower in the San'in region. Known as "Chidori Castle" (千鳥城) for its black horizontal-plank exterior, it is characterized by sturdy, practical construction befitting real combat. The interior retains period craftsmanship throughout, including wells built in preparation for siege and thick timber framing. The top floor, reached by climbing steep wooden stairs, is a lookout tower with 360-degree views where you can observe the shimmering Lake Shinji, the undulating tiled roofs of the castle town, and the moat you just traversed by boat. Climbing the castle tower on foot after viewing it from the water provides the distinctive perspective shift that makes this course special.

Tips

The path to the main enclosure involves uphill slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. The castle tower's interior stairs are quite steep; a backpack with hands-free carrying is recommended. Leave large luggage at the entrance and travel light. The top floor offers refreshing breezes and is ideal for leisurely enjoying the views.
