Izumo Soba Lunch and Castle Town Strolling Along the Pine-Lined Moat Street
About this spot
On the north side of Matsue Castle, this approximately 500-meter street lined with old pines along the moat is a signature landscape of Matsue, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Roads. During the Edo period, this area was home to middle-rank samurai residences, and white-walled buildings and traditional long townhouses preserve the atmosphere of the castle town. For lunch, try the local specialty Izumo soba—buckwheat noodles made from the whole grain (darker in color) are layered in round lacquerware bowls in the distinctive Matsue style: top with condiments and pour broth directly over them. After eating, take a leisurely walk along the moat and enjoy watching pleasure boats pass by from the shore—a unique perspective only available after a boat tour.
Tips
Soba restaurants along the street get crowded during lunch hours, so arriving before noon or visiting during off-peak times is advisable. The moat-side area has limited shaded sections, so a hat is recommended in summer. The area has cobblestones and gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes duration. Before and after noon, the pine tree shade along the moat provides pleasant cooling.
