A mountain castle standing on Mount Gagyuu (臥牛山) at approximately 430 meters elevation and the only mountain castle among Japan's twelve existing original castle towers. The stone walls, built directly upon natural massive boulders, are magnificent, and the two-tiered, two-story castle tower and double turret are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. The moment when the white-walled castle tower appears after a 20-minute hike up the castle approach path continuing from Fuigo Pass (ふいご峠) is moving no matter how many times you visit. From the main citadel, you can see a panoramic view of Takahashi's castle town (高梁の城下町) and layers of overlapping mountains. From autumn to winter, on crisp early mornings, it is known as the 'castle in the sky' floating above clouds. The interior of the castle tower is also open to visitors, where features unique to mountain castles remain, such as the hearth room and the room for ceremonial robes, which show preparations for siege.
Tips
Park your car at the Shiromibashi Park Parking Lot (城見橋公園駐車場) and during busy periods take the shuttle bus to Fuigo Pass (ふいご峠) (during quiet periods, a limited number of vehicles can drive up to the Fuigo Pass parking lot). From the pass to the castle tower is about a 20-minute mountain trail, so comfortable walking shoes and water are essential. Purchase admission tickets at the ticket office in the main citadel.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Early morning offers a cool approach path, fewer crowds, and the opportunity to quietly enjoy the castle tower in clear, crisp air.
