A scenic district that spreads along the Konya River (紺屋川), which once served as the outer moat of Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, where the tree-lined avenue of cherry blossoms and willows was selected as one of the 'Hundred Best Roads of Japan.' Walking along the promenade listening to the gentle flow of the river, you will find points of interest scattered about, such as the Takahashi Christian Church Hall (高梁基督教会堂), known as one of the oldest church buildings in the prefecture, and the ruins of the Hankou Yushu Academy (藩校有終館跡). The riverside landscape woven together by stone bridges and willows is quintessential castle town atmosphere. There are old-fashioned eateries and tea houses scattered in the surrounding area, perfect for a lunch break. After your meal, leisurely walk along the river and build up energy for the afternoon mountain road drive to Fukiya.
Tips
Since there are not many eateries, arriving early at busy lunch hours is advisable to avoid waiting. The Takahashi Christian Church Hall (高梁基督教会堂) should be enjoyed with quiet exterior viewing as the basic approach. It is within walking distance from downtown parking lots and also accessible on foot from Ishihi-ya Town.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. At midday, bright light makes the river surface sparkle, and the green of the willow groves looks most striking.
