A Refreshing Morning Visit at the "Shrine of Morning Sun," Bizen Province's Chief Shrine

Enshrined at the eastern foot of Mount Kibi no Nakayama, revered as the mountain of the gods, this is the chief shrine of Bizen Province. It honors Okikibitsuhiko no Mikoto, said to be the model for Momotaro, and is also called the "Shrine of Morning Sun" because its architecture is arranged so that morning sunlight rises directly through the torii gate and illuminates the sacred mirror in the main hall. The large stone lantern standing in the approach, about 11 meters tall, preserves the style of the Ansei period and is among the largest of its kind in Japan—its grandeur is best appreciated from close range, looking up at it. On the grounds, the sacred Heian-era cedar spreads its branches, and a morning walk through the crisp air fills you with the reverent spirit befitting the start of a new day. Don't miss the small shrines on Crane Island and Turtle Island floating in the pond.

Tips

Free parking available. Also easily accessible via a short walk from Bizen-Ichinomiya Station on the JR Kibi Line (Momotaro Line). Early morning visits mean fewer visitors and a peaceful prayer experience. You can receive a temple seal (goshuin) at the seal office, so bringing your seal book is a fine way to begin the day's shrine and temple tour.

Plan for approximately 45 minutes. Early morning air is crisp and the shrine grounds are beautifully illuminated by the rising sun—the best time for a peaceful visit.
