About this spot
The chief shrine of Bitchu Province and the highlight of a historical walk along the Kibi route. The legend of the enshrined deity, Okikibitsuhiko no Mikoto, subduing the demon Onra is said to be the prototype of the Momotaro folktale. The main hall and worship hall, featuring a double-roofed hipped style joined front and back (called "Kibitsu-zukuri"), are national treasures—this architectural style exists nowhere else in Japan. The wooden corridor extending about 360 meters along the mountain's contours is an awe-inspiring space where the scenery transforms with each step. Midway along the corridor stands the Sacred Cauldron Hall, where the mystical "Naki-kama" divination ritual—determining fortune by the sound of a cauldron—continues to this day, allowing you to feel firsthand the spiritual depth of prayers spanning from ancient times.
Tips
Free parking available. As the national treasure main hall is reached by climbing stone steps, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The corridor round trip covers considerable distance, so allow plenty of time. If you wish to observe the Naki-kama ritual, check with the staff at the Sacred Cauldron Hall (a separate prayer fee applies).
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Morning light streaming through the corridor is beautiful, and this is when there are fewer tour groups, allowing for a leisurely walk.
