Counted among Japan's three greatest Inari shrines, Saijo Inari Sanzan Myokyo-ji Temple is a rare spiritual site that retains a strong sense of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, with torii gates lining the approach despite being a temple. The massive torii gate standing about 27.5 meters tall, rising unexpectedly from the rice paddies, is a landmark of the Kibi route whose sight through a car window brings excitement. After passing through the Nio Gate to pay respects at the main temple, the real pleasure awaits in the gate town along the approach. Traditional eateries and souvenir shops line the street, where you can warm your belly with hot soba or udon noodles and enjoy the specialty yuzu senbei as a snack. The shrine dedicated to both auspicious matchmaking and breaking bad connections is also popular, making this a delightful experience blending prayer, lunch, and sightseeing all in one.
Tips
Paid parking lots are available near the approach (around 500 yen). The gate town gets crowded around lunch hours, so visiting slightly earlier or later will be more comfortable. The approach features a gentle uphill slope, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Yuzu senbei are sold individually and make wonderful souvenirs.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Visit around midday with the lunch period to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the gate town during your prayer.
