Located in the Shio-machi Historic Preservation District, where old merchant houses line the Izumo Kaido route, this former residence of the Kajimura family is a representative example and is open to the public free of charge. From the main structure built in the Edo period to modern Western-style rooms and storehouses, buildings added over different eras remain in succession, allowing you to trace the changing lives of wealthy merchants. The layout is a luxurious one where visitors can tour the courtyard, tea room, and detached sitting room. The surrounding townscape is well-known as a film location. The street lined with namako walls, side walls, and insect-cage windows conveys the feeling of stepping back in time with every leisurely stroll.

Tips

The townscape extends east-west, so it's good to decide how much you'll explore based on your available time. The Shio-machi Tourist Parking Lot is convenient for cars. Many of the latticed and curtained houses are active residences and shops, so be mindful of the people living and working there.
