Morning Prayer at an Ancient Shrine, Watched Over by a Great Camphor Tree That Covers the Sky

An ancient shrine nestled right beside the Senkoji Mountain Ropeway base station, said to be the oldest shrine in Onomichi. The giant camphor tree standing in the grounds is said to be 900 years old and commands an impressive presence. As you pass through the stone torii gate, the sky is completely enveloped by the branches and leaves of the great camphor tree. The soft morning light filtering through the gaps in the leaves has an almost mystical quality, perfect for the beginning of a slope-town walk. Known as the setting for films and anime, visitors who are fans of these works also come here. After praying for safe travels and good relationships, you're ready to head to Senkoji Mountain.
Tips
Located right beside the ropeway base station, so it's efficient to visit before boarding. The grounds are adjacent to a residential area, so be quiet in the morning. There is no dedicated parking, so if driving, park in the parking lot near Onomichi Station and walk.
Best time to visit
About 30 minutes needed. Early morning before tourists arrive is best—the dappled sunlight through the great camphor tree is beautiful and you can pray peacefully.
