A 3-Minute Aerial Walk with Panoramic Views of the Onomichi Strait and Shimanami Islands
About this spot
A ropeway that connects the base station near Uon Shrine to the summit station of Senkoji Mountain in approximately 3 minutes. As the gondola ascends, the houses of Onomichi, the Onomichi Strait, ferries passing back and forth, the nearby island of Mukaishima, and the Shimanami islands stretching beyond come into view, and the scenery changes dramatically during this short ride. Upon exiting the summit station, there's an observation deck right away where you can take in the multi-island beauty characteristic of the Seto Inland Sea. The ascent of Senkoji Mountain, with its many slopes and stone steps, becomes enjoyable with light steps when the climbing is left to the ropeway. Walking down on the return is the classic way to enjoy the Onomichi walk.
Tips
Operates at approximately 15-minute intervals. It's recommended to purchase a one-way ticket for the ascent only, and walk down via the Literature Path on the way back. Standing on the sea side of the gondola offers better views. On holidays, there may be waiting times, so early morning boarding is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 30 minutes total (approximately 3 minutes riding + time at summit observation deck). In the clear morning air, the outlines of the islands are distinctly visible.
