A retro-atmosphere shopping arcade stretching approximately 1.2 km eastward from near Onomichi Station. Established canvas shops and bookstores stand alongside traditional coffee houses, mixed in with new general stores and bakeries, and simply walking through gives you a sense of Onomichi's daily life. Your destination is the local specialty: Onomichi Ramen. A bowl with soy-based broth enriched by the richness of back fat, complemented by flat noodles that grip the broth perfectly, is the ideal reward after your slope walk. After your meal, take a leisurely stroll through the arcade searching for souvenirs—sweets made with hassaku citrus or small items made from Onomichi canvas. Spend your final moments immersed in the nostalgia of a port town.
Tips
Popular ramen shops invariably have lines. The early afternoon period around 2 PM, before the lunch rush, is a relatively easier time to get in. Be slightly careful while walking in the arcade as bicycles also pass through. Some shops close early, so if you find a souvenir you like, it's best to purchase it when you see it.
Best time to visit
About 2.5 to 3 hours needed. From early afternoon onward, the crowds thin out and you can enjoy both meals and shopping at a leisurely pace.
