Stroll Through a Tiny Alley Full of Cats, Searching for Lucky Stone Cats

A narrow alley about 200 meters long extending up the slope on the east side of Uon Shrine, below the three-story pagoda of Tennei Temple. Throughout this small lane, round stones with cat faces drawn on them called "lucky stone cats" are placed about, and simply searching for them as you walk naturally brings smiles to your faces. Cafes and small shops created by renovating old houses dot the alley, along with a tiny museum lined with lucky cats, and the landscape woven by the greenery and stone pavements of the lane, combined with real cats appearing from time to time, feels like stepping into a picture book world. One of the most photogenic areas in the slope town of Onomichi, walking together here will spark conversation at every turn. Find your favorite lucky stone cat and take a commemorative photo to remember your trip.
Tips
The stone pavement can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing. Cats are unpredictable—if you encounter one, observe quietly (please refrain from feeding). It's a narrow alley where even passing each other is difficult, so yield to others. Taking a break at one of the cafes along the way will make the afternoon easier.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes needed. Cats are more likely to come out for sunbathing during warm daytime hours.
