About this spot

A grand feudal lord's garden that once served as the villa of the Asano clan, lords of Hiroshima, and is said to have been designed by Ueda Sōkō, a master of tea ceremony aesthetics. Centered around Takuei Pond, said to be modeled after West Lake in China, the garden skillfully incorporates mountains, valleys, tea houses, and bridges. Walking the circuit path allows you to experience the essence of a pond-circuit stroll garden as scenery transforms with each step. A highlight is the arched stone bridge, the Kōkōkyō, spanning the pond's center. Enveloped in a serenity unexpected in the city center, the garden's greenery gently cools your heat-flushed body after the teppan experience. Consider combining your visit with the adjacent Prefectural Art Museum.

Tips

The garden is about a 20-minute walk from Honndori or accessible by tram or bus. The path is primarily gravel, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Pause for rest at benches by the pond and follow the designated route for the best experience of all the highlights.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. In the afternoon, soft light reflects off the pond, making the garden most radiant.
