Deeply Confront Hiroshima's Memory: Main Peace Learning Experience
About this spot
Standing on the south side of Peace Memorial Park, this is the core facility for conveying Hiroshima's memory. The main building displays artifacts and photographs of survivors, along with actual materials, each presented carefully to tell the story of that day as the personal histories of individuals. The East Building offers a broad perspective on the dangers of nuclear weapons and Hiroshima's journey, and welcomes many visitors from around the world. The building, designed by architect Kenzo Tange (丹下健三), itself embodies prayer through its design—the axis of the park connecting the museum to the Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims and the Atomic Bomb Dome forms a direct line of commemoration. Walking through the park after your visit, you'll recognize that the entire cityscape has been shaped by wishes for peace.
Tips
Just after opening offers relatively calm viewing. The exhibits are deeply moving, so allow plenty of time. Renting an audio guide (fee-based) greatly deepens understanding. The building is well air-conditioned, so bringing a light jacket is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Right after opening, there are fewer crowds, allowing for quiet engagement with the displays.
