Survey the Atomic Bomb Dome and Reconstructed City from the Rooftop Observation Deck
About this spot
This mixed-use building stands immediately east of the Atomic Bomb Dome. From the rooftop observation deck "Hiroshima no Oka" (ひろしまの丘), you can view the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park, and the cityscape and mountain ranges beyond; on clear days, you can even see the Miyajima (宮島) area. The open observation space, which makes generous use of wood, offers the comfort of sitting on the floor and feeling the breeze. Walking down the spiral slope "Sanpo-zaka" (散歩坂) connecting the floors is also a delightful experience. At the "Orizuru Plaza" (おりづる広場) on intermediate floors, you can fold paper cranes and place them in the glass-walled "Orizuru Wall" (おりづるの壁) to entrust your wishes. The first floor features a souvenir shop with Hiroshima specialties and a café, making it perfect for a midday break.
Tips
For lunch, try the café on the first floor or the numerous okonomiyaki (savory pancake) restaurants nearby. Entering your crane into the Orizuru Wall incurs a separate fee from admission (approximately 100 yen), so bring small change. The observation deck is semi-outdoor, so watch your footing on rainy days.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours. Lunchtime is pleasant with the café break included, and bright light flooding the observation deck feels wonderful.
