A waterfront park where Maritime Self-Defense Force submarines and escort ships can be viewed from the land closer than anywhere else in Japan. Lined up at the wharf just in front are black submarines, and you may even see crew members walking across the deck. Surrounding the area are red brick warehouses remaining from the former Imperial Navy era and cranes once used for torpedo loading, quietly telling the story of Kure's history as a naval port. At dusk, the silhouettes of submarines float against the crimson sky, creating a dramatic scene worthy of the finale to a day filled with vehicles.
Tips
About a 10-minute bus ride from Kure Station, getting off at the Sensuigumi-mae bus stop. The park itself is compact, so exploring it together with the surrounding red brick warehouses is recommended. Respect the boundary from which viewing is conducted, and binoculars will enhance the experience.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. In the evening, the western sun causes the submarine silhouettes to stand out beautifully—the perfect way to conclude your day.
