Walk Through a Grand Canyon of the Quasi-National Park with Limestone Cliffs and Clear Streams
About this spot
A grand canyon stretching approximately 18 kilometers, carved by the Taisho River over long ages through the limestone plateau of the Chugoku Mountains. Designated as a nationally designated scenic spot and renowned as a representative scenic area of Hiba-Dogo-Taisho Quasi-National Park. The walking path on the upper Taisho side generally follows the cliffs and clear stream on level terrain, with the charm of walking alongside the river's murmuring through deep green vegetation. Along the way, sights unique to limestone formations dot the path, such as Hakuun Cave and Oni-no-Karamon (the arch-shaped rock formation), leading to the natural bridge Oohashi—a thrilling prelude to your gorge walk.
Tips
Park your car at the paid parking area at Kami-Taisho and enter the walking path. It's approximately 1 kilometer one-way and about 30 minutes on foot to Oohashi Bridge. The path is generally level but has unpaved sections, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Use the restrooms near the parking area.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Morning light filtering into the valley makes the clear stream appear even more crystalline.
