Hofu Tenmangu Shrine (防府天満宮)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A historic Tenjin shrine said to be the first ever established in Japan in honor of Sugawara no Michizane. It is counted among Japan's three great Tenjin shrines, alongside Kitano Tenmangu (北野天満宮) in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu (太宰府天満宮) in Fukuoka, and has long been widely revered as the god of scholarship. Climbing the stone steps that begin at the great torii gate, you'll be greeted by a vermillion-painted romon gate, and within the grounds stands the Shunpu Tower offering views over Hofu's streets and far out to the Seto Inland Sea. The teahouse Gyoten Tower (暁天楼) that remains along the approach path is the place where Bakumatsu patriots such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Sakamoto Ryoma are said to have sought refuge and held secret meetings. A fitting opening to your historical walk, this shrine is full of stories.

Tips

Free parking is available below the grounds. In the morning, there are fewer visitors and you can pay your respects in a calm atmosphere. The stone steps are numerous, so wear comfortable shoes. Viewing treasures at the history museum requires a separate admission fee.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The grounds are quiet in the morning, allowing you to pray at a leisurely pace in the fresh air.
