Flow of the course

About this spot

A branch temple of Todai-ji in Nara, said to have been founded in Suo Province by Chogen the Abbot, who devoted his life to the reconstruction of Todai-ji, using the area as a supply base for building materials. It preserves numerous cultural properties, including the National Treasure iron pagoda (tettō), and the imposing Kongō Rikishi (Deva guardian) statues enshrined at the Niō Gate are impressive sights. In early summer, hydrangeas blanket the grounds and line the stone-stepped approach path, earning it the affectionate name 'Hydrangea Temple.' As you climb the approach path step by step, enveloped in woodland, the bustle of the town fades and your mind is quieted by the sacred stillness surrounding you—a sacred space befitting the conclusion of a day of historical walking.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from central Hofu; free parking is available. During hydrangea season, a mountain entry fee is charged and parking can get crowded. Stone steps and slopes can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. In the evening, the western sun illuminates the wooded approach path, enveloping you in a quiet, serene atmosphere.
