A grand mansion and extensive strolling garden spanning approximately 84,000 square meters, created as the main residence of the Mouri family, former lords of Choshu Domain. Part of the mansion is open to the public as the Mouri Museum, housing invaluable collections said to number in the tens of thousands—including the National Treasure 'Landscapes of Four Seasons' (a long scroll of landscape painting) by Sesshu, as well as armor and correspondence connected to the Mouri family of Choshu, who spearheaded the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration. The expansive strolling garden, centered on a large pond, displays beautiful seasonal changes; as you follow the garden paths, you'll experience the grand scale unique to a daimyo family, with the borrowed scenery of surrounding mountains and the mansion creating a unified composition. A fitting climax to your historical walk.

Tips

Within walking distance from Umeterasu, though there are gentle uphill sections, so allow adequate time. A combination ticket for both the garden and museum offers good value. The grounds have many gravel paths, so wear comfortable shoes. Exhibits vary by season.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. In the afternoon, light reflects off the garden pond, and the views of the mansion and garden are at their most beautiful.
