A Spectacular 360-Degree View Over the Green Plateau Dotted with White Limestone
About this spot
Located near the center of Akiyoshi-dai, Japan's largest karst plateau, this observatory stands on a hilltop overlooking the grassland. Below spreads a unique landscape of white limestone formations (karrenfelts) scattered across verdant grassland, with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. This limestone plateau was once a coral reef formed in an ancient sea, gradually uplifted over eons, then carved and dissolved by rain to become the landscape you see today. A walking trail surrounds the observatory, offering close-up views of distinctive karst formations such as funnel-shaped depressions called 'doline'.
Tips
Free parking available near the observatory. The plateau top has little shade, so don't forget a hat and sunscreen. Wear sturdy-soled shoes if walking the trails.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Mid-morning with high sunlight brings out the striking contrast between the green grassland and white limestone.
