A Mystical Spring-Fed Pond Glowing in Captivating Cobalt Blue
About this spot
Located in the Beppu district of Akiyosh Town, Mines City, this mystical spring-fed pond glows with cobalt-blue water. Rainwater seeping into the karst plateau flows underground for extended periods, and upon emerging rich in minerals, creates a striking blue hue depending on light conditions. Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Water Sources, the water has exceptional transparency—so clear you can see straight to the bottom. The water temperature remains nearly constant year-round. An adjacent trout farm offers both fishing and dining on rainbow trout raised in this spring water. Nestled beneath a shrine's torii gate and surrounded by a sacred grove, the softly glowing blue pond is breathtakingly beautiful.
Tips
Free parking available. While viewing the pond itself takes little time, allow adequate time if you plan to enjoy spring-water coffee or trout dishes. Bring an empty bottle to take home some of this prized water from the water collection point.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. When the sun is high, the water surface glows with particularly vivid blue.
