The Ichinozaka River flowing through central Yamaguchi is said to have been modeled after Kyoto's Kamo River by the Ouchi clan, who developed Yamaguchi's urban layout during the Muromachi period. It is the place that most vividly preserves the character of "Western Kyoto, Yamaguchi." Cherry trees line both banks, and scattered along the riverside are historic townhouses, warehouses-turned-cafés, galleries, and miscellaneous shops. A leisurely stroll listening to the gentle murmur of the stream is already a picturesque date experience. The river is also known as a habitat for Genji fireflies, proof of its clean waters, and several charming stone bridges span it at various points. Enjoy lunch at a riverside café, and after your meal, wander at your leisure and explore the shops.

Tips

Many riverside cafés have limited seating, so arriving early during lunch hours is advisable. The surrounding area has many one-way narrow streets; it's best to park at a nearby coin parking lot and walk. The stone pavement and areas near the bridges offer many photogenic spots, so don't forget your camera.
