About this spot
Built to commemorate the missionary Francis Xavier's visit to Yamaguchi, this cathedral stands atop Kameyama Park, its pristine white form serving as one of the symbols of Yamaguchi City. Two towers reaching 53 meters high stretch elegantly toward the sky, creating a striking modern exterior. Upon entering, colorful light from the stained glass windows bathes the interior walls, creating an austere yet fantastical space. The adjoining Christian Memorial Hall allows you to learn about Xavier's connection to Yamaguchi and the history of Christianity's transmission to the region. From the hilltop, you can look out over the entire cityscape of Yamaguchi—a quiet spot befitting a romantic date, where you can sense the meeting of Ouchi culture and Western tradition.
Tips
A donation for viewing is requested. Please refrain from visiting during Mass, weddings, or funerals. The climb to the hilltop involves stairs, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Maintain reverent silence inside, and follow posted instructions regarding photography. The view of Yamaguchi's cityscape from the Kameyama Park side is also worth enjoying.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. In the morning, light plays across the white exterior walls, and the interior stained glass glows beautifully.
